From the article, "his application and acceptance into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point." If Dr Carson ever stated he applied to West Point, he lied.
However, the article doesn't quote anything directly for Dr. Carson where he stated he applied and got accepted.
I guess in politics and media, truth doesn't matter. Wonder which opponent did the research?
